ORATORICAL CONTESTS

Modern Woodmen of America
Civic Oration Contest

Recently, Mrs. Peluso listened to her students deliver their speeches on "What Makes America Great." Eleven finalists were selected to present their speech to the Middle School. The fifth grade students were also present to hear these speeches for the first time. The eleven finalists selected were: Patch Kuhlman, Emily Deegan, Kiersten Gunning, Katie Galligan, Casey Kelley, Eleanor Cecconi, Trey Fletcher, Alex Tiemeier, Marta Perez, Samantha Saucier, and Sean Carey-Love. Wednesday, February 27th, these students waited anxiously to present their speeches in front of the entire Middle School and Fifth Grade classes. The panel of judges included Mrs. Mimi Whitehouse, Mrs. Terri Moore (Principal of Holy Spirit Catholic School), and Ms. Sidney Katsikas. Numbers were drawn to determine the order of their presentations and what followed was truly wonderful! At the conclusion of the presentations three winners were chosen:

3rd Place – Eleanor Cecconi

2nd Place – Emily Deegan

1st Place – Casey Kelley

These students have won the privilege to compete in the Level II Competition to be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic School on Monday, March 4th, @ 6:30 p.m.

The winner of the Level II Competition will be competing at the Level III Competition the following week, Monday, March 11th, @ 6:30 p.m.

THANK YOU STUDENTS, FOR A JOB WELL DONE! GOOD LUCK, GIRLS!

Modern Woodmen of America
Civic Oration Contest

Each year, during the third marking period, the entire middle school population participates in a speech contest sponsored by The Modern Woodmen of America.  The MWA is a fraternal life insurance company based in Rock Island, Illinois.  This contest is nationwide; its purpose is to develop students' confidence through public speaking.  The contest encourages students to learn how to research, organize and refine specific topics and to present a three to five minute memorized speech to their peers.

This year's topic, which had been selected prior to September 11th, is "what Makes the USA Great?"  All students will be given the same guidelines and time to write, memorize and present their speech.

On February 19th, and throughout that week, Mrs. Peluso and Mr. DeClemente will combine classes, according to grade level (6,7,8) and listen to presentations.

On Wednesday, February 27th, the ten best speeches will be presented by their orators in the Church at 1:30 pm.  Three judges, selected by Mrs. Boice and Mrs. Peluso, will choose three students to represent St. Paul's Catholic School at a Level II Diocesan Competition.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL 6th, 7th & 8th GRADERS!!!
